The Living Forest (237) : Honeysuckle Azalea (1)

It’s wonderful in the forest when at this time of the year the Honeysuckle Azalea shows his glory in full bloom.
Even a couple of mute swans seems to enjoy its beauty.

Honeysuckle Azalea is a huge shrub native to southeastern Europe and southwest Asia.
The bright yellow flowers are strongly perfumed, but -what is generally little known- their nectar is toxic !

The shrub is widely cultivated in western Europe but is also locally naturalised and colonised in mainly wet forests.

Dutch name : Bosazalea
German name : Pontische Azalee (auch Gelbe Alpenrose genannt)
Latin name : Azalea pontica (syn. Rhododendron luteum)
