The Living Forest (342) : Domestic Goose
The Domestic Goose is derived from the wild Greylag Goose (see picture below) and this domestication (for meat, eggs and down feathers) is of very ancient date (archaeological evidence in Egypt from more than 4000 years ago !)
One individual weighs about 10 kg. This is much more compared to the average 4 kg. for the Greylag Goose.
Nowadays this animal also lives frequently in the great outdoors, such as parks and forest ponds (that’s why I placed this picture in my series of ‘The Living Forest’)
Dutch name : Huisgans
German name : Hausgänse
Latin name : Anser anser domesticus

a shot that makes me understand why geese are popular fairy tale creatures: they look so resolute, so pensive, so smart and so worldly-wise that one readily believes they may be enchanted kings and queens with loads and loads of stories to tell! ; ) this one here both seems to enjoy the last rays of a low sun and be acutely aware of your photographic presence! great capture, as always, mark! the white plumage was tricky, i bet… greetings, sabine.Gerlinde Gottschalk 29/09/2015 18:20

LG! a.
