The Middle Ages (42) : Torturer

This series is an attempt to illustrate how life was going on in the Middle Ages.

A torturer was a recognized profession that was part of a tribunal.
In underground dungeons, he did his brutal job as a common practice in those dark times.
Torture was deemed a legitimate means to extract confessions !

Not only criminals were tortured, but also innocent civilians.
In those times, persecution of so called witches was widespread.
Witchcraft was an imaginary crime against christianity and lots of women have suffered and died from brutally tortures……under approval of the Pope !

Photographed at medieval festival of castle Franchimont (Belgium).
