Trinity Monument

The obelisk on Trinity Site, 'Where The World's First Nuclear Device Was Exploded On July 16th, 1945' - as seen on 5 April, 2009. It is on what is today White Sands Missile Range, and open to the public on the first weekends of April an October.

I had of course forgotten that by the time I came around WSMR on the first leg of my extended USA road trip in 2008 and missed the October date because I had been at a friend's wedding in Bolivia that weekend.

All in all, I have to say the visit underwhelmed me. There is basically nothing left to see there that would remind you of the violence of that first nuclear event on Earth, except for very occasional, very small small shards of 'trinitite' glass, desert sand that was molten from the heat but ploughed under decades ago.
