Walk through Prasat Phra Vihaan
The Naga Balustrade in Phra Vihaan.
This photo actually belongs in the folder with my pictures from Cambodia, but we entered the holy precinct of Prasat Phra Vihaan from the Thai side.
Prasat Phra Vihaan is called Preah Vihear Temple on the Cambodian side and is a Khmer Hindu temple from the 10th to 12th century. It stands on the 525 meter high rocky hill Pey Tadi in the Dongrek Mountains, whose watershed forms the border between the Thai province of Si Sa Ket and the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear.
For decades, the complex has been at the center of a sometimes violent border conflict. In 2008, the temple was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ultimately, the dispute over the temple goes much deeper and is based on the historical relationship between the two nations. In the past, large parts of what is now Thailand were under the rule of the Khmer kings, until the balance of power later reversed, so that today many important Khmer temples are located on Thai territory.
The photo is a scan of my photos from a visit from the Thai side in 2000, to which I have dedicated a separate album.
