The Living Forest (172) : Lichens

Just like fungi, lichens too are an interesting and fascinating aspect of nature with 25.000 species having been described and identified worldwide.

A lichen is a composite organism consisting of a fungus and a (green) alga and grows as a single individual mostly on trees (but also on bare rocks, man made walls and concrete gravestones).
Lichens form a nice colourful accent in the winter forest.

The tree trunk in the picture is covered with two species of lichens at the same time.
Shield Lichen on the left and Yellow Scale on the right.

Dutch name : Gewoon Schildmos (l) & Groot Dooiermos (r)
German name : Sulcatflechte (l) & Gewöhnliche Gelbflechte (r)
Latin name : Parmelia sulcata & Xanthoria Parietina
