2. Platz...

...bei der Abstimmung zum Gartentier des Jahres 2022

Fünf starke Konkurrenten waren mit im Wettbewerb der Sielmann-Stiftung. Da hat man es als Eichhörnchen nicht leicht. Nur die Blauschwarze Holzbiene hat mich aus dem Rennen geschlagen, aber mal ehrlich: Putziger sind doch meine Artgenossen und ich. Ein paar Haselnüsse für den zweiten Platz waren auch noch drin. ;-)

Im Frühjahr nutzte ich mehrere Gelegenheiten meinen neuen 3D-Tarnanzug auszuprobieren. Walnüsse, Haselnüsse, Erdnüsse und Wildvogelfutter als kleinen Anreiz ausgestreut, mich auf die ISO-Matte gelegt und geduldig gewartet. Als könnte man die Uhr nach ihnen stellen, waren sie - fast regelmäßig - eine halbe Stunde später da und kamen den Baumstamm herunter geklettert. Erst scheu und zaghaft, dann immer mutiger, kam erst ein Hörnchen herunter und später noch ein zweites, kleineres. Das dritte Eichhörnchen traute sich nie bis auf den Boden hinab und schaute nur aus dem Geäst heraus. Die beiden Anderen sprangen durch das Unterholz, suchten nach Nahrung und wurden immer mutiger. Sobald sie eine Walnuss fanden, wurde diese zur Sicherheit sofort in ein nahe gelegenes Versteck gebracht. Haselnüsse und Erdnüsse wurden sofort verzehrt. Dabei wurden sie immer zutraulicher und kamen bis auf zirka anderthalb Meter heran. Ein wunderbares Erlebnis! Sie hatten mich natürlich längst entdeckt, aber durch den Tarnanzug waren sie zwar vorsichtig, aber nicht wirklich ängstlich. Es sind dort noch immer Wildtiere, die sich nicht von Hand füttern lassen. Viermal konnte ich sie jeweils für anderthalb bis zwei Stunden fotografieren, danach nochmals eine halbe Stunde und danach sahich nur noch eines hochoben im Baum. Es ist nun Sommer und sie finden wieder eigenständig ihre Nahrung. Allerdings sah ich einige Zeit später ganz in der Nähe einen Fuchs und fand jede Menge Federn einer, wohl toten, Elster. Das mag auch ein Grund für den Rückzug der Eichhörnchen sein. Ich hoffe, sie bald gesund und munter wiederzusehen. Kleiner Tipp: Ein 3-D Tarnanzug kann auch zu einer Überprüfung durch die Polizei führen. Aber das ist eine andere Geschichte.

...when voting for the garden animal of the year 2022

Five strong competitors took part in the Sielmann Foundation competition. It's not easy being a squirrel. Only the blue-black carpenter bee beat me out of the race, but to be honest: my conspecifics and I are cuter. A few hazelnuts for second place were also still in there. ;-)

In the spring I used several opportunities to try out my new 3D camouflage suit. Scattered walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts and wild bird seed as a small incentive, lay down on the ISO mat and waited patiently. As if you could set the clock by them, they were there - almost regularly - half an hour later and came climbing down the tree trunk. First shy and timid, then more and more courageous, first a squirrel came down and later a second, smaller one. The third squirrel never dared to go down to the ground and only looked out of the branches. The other two jumped through the undergrowth looking for food and got braver and braver. As soon as they found a walnut, it was immediately taken to a nearby hiding place for safety. Hazelnuts and peanuts were eaten immediately. They became more and more trusting and came up to about one and a half meters. A wonderful experience! Of course, they had long since spotted me, but the camouflage suit made them cautious but not really afraid. There are still wild animals there that cannot be hand-fed. I was able to photograph them four times for one and a half to two hours each, then another half hour and then I only saw one high up in the tree. It's summer now and they're finding their own food again. However, some time later I saw a fox very close by and found a lot of feathers from a probably dead magpie. That may also be a reason for the retreat of the squirrels. I hope to see her safe and sound again soon. A little tip: A 3-D camouflage suit can also lead to a police check. But this is another story.
