Along the Old Main - No.6
A long train of tanker cars rumbles through the grade crossing
at Sykesville, Maryland on the historic Old Main Line.
The Old Main, originally built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, now part of CSX, runs through the craggy valley of the Patapsco River valley from Relay, near Baltimore to Point of Rocks, Maryland (*). There, at a curving wye, it joins the Metropolitan Branch from Washington, heading west to West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
The Old Main is used exclusively by freight trains, except for a very short stretch
which is used by MARC commuter trains from Washington to Frederick, Maryland.
