Making a Living - Yster
This is a first in a new series of pictures I took of people busy making a living.
Anlie and I were sitting at the river in the little town of Parys. We saw this man in a canoe far from us in the river. In front of us was this dog in the pic below and a bicycle chained to a pole. I tried to photograph the dog, but she got very irritated if I dared come in between her and her master. She intensely watched her master as he paddled from line to line and eventually as he came to the shore with these two fish. I asked him his name. He said everybody calls him Yster (Afrikaans for Iron). Yster doesn't have a fridge, so he salts his fish and hangs them up to dry before he cooks them a couple of days later
I wish you a wonderful Sunday

i bet yster would have loved his picture! did he get to see it? you made him and his fish look really great in it – somewhat heroic, with the busy and determined look in his eyes (evidence of his "iron will"), the winter light illuminating his face and the beautiful silvery and rosy fish he's hung up to dry and ripen – a good catch, i reckon… great shot and story, deryck! it gets me in the mood for more, and i love the wintry landscape in the back! greetings, sabine. p.s.: go, brakkie! good girl!! ; )Sue Thompson 08/07/2012 8:44
A good shot of Yster and his catch of the day.A moving story of how this young man lives.......and what a great friend he has in that dog.
