Signs of their time...
Back in the 1930s and ‘40s when Peter Witt type streetcars
were wending their way through the streets of Baltimore, the job
classification, whether called operator or motorman, told the
gender-specific story, including above that person's seat.
And passengers returning from a trip to the grocery store could rest easy
in the knowledge they’d not be ingesting any of that dreaded “Benzoate of Soda”
when they slathered their Heinz ‘57’ Ketchup on their summertime burgers ‘n’ fries.
It would take another couple of generations for more types of food to
become more sinister in the minds of consumers in terms of their contents ;-)
