...the Tam O'Shanter murals

The historic Torphichen Inn is on the corner of a quiet street, Low Brae, with the B792 main road. Halfway the Low Brae forks and after a left turn leads right to the through road towards Westfield. The right fork becomes an uphill walkway leading to St John's Hall: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Lk3JPVnFKvPh8pcn6 Following the link to Google Street View and walking away from the Hall, it goes to the Turn left, back towards the pub. A little straight ahead where John's former house is and then to the right the road leads out of Torphichen as mentioned above. If you take the road to the left you will come to a junction leading right to Bathgate, straight ahead to Cairnpapple Hill and left to Torphichen Square. Street View gives the user a good idea of the small village.

Back to the Torphichen Inn: Just as I was about to take a picture of the pub that morning, the post bus pulled up in the frame. In the main part of the building - on the far right in the picture - is the Public Bar, the most visited part of the locals. The door behind the tree with the red blossoms leads to the restaurant and the door in the next corner to the lounge bar, the function room. On warm summer days you can also enjoy your beer outside in the beer garden; Whereby a rain protection you have brought with you can occasionally be helpful.

 "At the end of 2015 I, Greg Moodie, was asked to design a series of murals at the Torphichen Inn, West Lothian, based on Robert Burns' poem Tam O'Shanter. I photographed local residents and collaged them together in what ended up being seven separate panels. I was six panels in, with no plan for the seventh, when the landlord suggested a portrait of Burns. That sounded good to me. I flipped the original image horizontally so it would face the bar and added a few fun things. Now Burns is on the outside of the building too. We launched the Tam O'Shanter Murals on March 18th 2016 at the Torphichen Inn with Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop. In the summer of that year I won 'Torphichen Citizen of the Year', which delighted me no end."

Das historische Torphichen Inn liegt an der Ecke einer ruhigen Straße, der Low Brae, mit der Hauptstraße B792. Auf halber Strecke gabelt sich die Low Brae und führt nach einer Linkskurve rechts zur Durchgangsstraße Richtung Westfield. Die rechte Abzweigung wird zum ansteigenden Fußweg, der zur St. John's Hall führt:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/Lk3JPVnFKvPh8pcn6 
Folgt man dem Link zu Google Street View und entfernt sich wieder von der Hall, so geht es an der Abzweigung nach links zurück Richtung Pub. Ein Stück geradeaus, dort wo sich John's früheres Haus befindet, und dann rechts führt die Straße - wie oben erwähnt - aus Torphichen hinaus. Wählt man die Straße nach links, so kommt man an eine Kreuzung die rechts nach Bathgate, geradeaus zum Cairnpapple Hill und links wieder zum Square von Torphichen führt. Street View verschafft dem Benutzer eine gute Vorstellung des kleinen Dorfes.

Zurück zum Torphichen Inn: Gerade als ich an diesem Morgen das Pub fotografieren wollte, hielt dort das Postauto im Bildausschnitt. Im Hauptteil des Gebäudes - ganz rechts im Bild - befindet sich die Public Bar, der meistbesuchte Teil der Locals. Die Tür hinter dem Baum mit den roten Blüten führt in's Restaurant und die Tür in der nächsten Ecke zur Lounge Bar, dem Veranstaltungsraum. An warmen Sommertagen kann man sein Bier auch draußen im Biergarten genießen; wobei ein mitgebrachter Regenschutz gelegentlich hilfreich sein kann.

„Ende 2015 wurde ich, Greg Moodie, gebeten, eine Reihe von Wandgemälden für das Torphichen Inn in West Lothian zu entwerfen, die auf Robert Burns‘ Gedicht „Tam O’Shanter“ basieren. Ich habe die Anwohner fotografiert und sie zu dem Ergebnis zusammengefügt Es handelte sich um sieben separate Tafeln. Ich war sechs Tafeln fertig und hatte keinen Plan für die siebte, als der Vermieter ein Porträt von Burns vorschlug. Das klang für mich gut. Ich drehte das Originalbild horizontal, sodass es zur Bar zeigte, und fügte ein paar lustige hinzu Dinge. Jetzt ist Burns auch außerhalb des Gebäudes. Wir haben die Tam O'Shanter Wandbilder am 18. März 2016 im Torphichen Inn mit Kulturministerin Fiona Hyslop ins Leben gerufen. Im Sommer dieses Jahres wurde ich zum „Torphichen-Bürger des Jahres“ gekürt. , was mich unendlich erfreut hat.
