Mother with her dead son...A morbid anniversary
We are going through a morbid anniversary these days.
100 years have passed since the declaration of First World War that proved the most stupid, useless and entirely unjustified human sacrifice in world's history with more than seven million soldiers dead in the miserable and rat filled trenches, most of them youngsters that, according to their senseless superiors, shouldn't have anything else in mind but blindly obey to orders that had to bring into completion. Virtually, there was no home without mourning a beloved in the bloodshed battlefields...
I selected to present this dull but so eloquant monument of mother and her dead son, at the heart of Berlin, because I beleive that it's heartbreaking symbolism can serve not only to commemorate all those unknown victims of war but also, what is more important, as a strong and eternal reminder of universal fraternity so much missing in our time...

The empty space around the figures just hightens the feelling of loneliness and desolation. We are all alone, separated from each other by fear and hatred, but always striving for closeness and peace.Ken Piros 03/07/2014 0:46
A very strong image with good tones.Tania Skaradek 29/06/2014 10:55
One hundred years this sad memorial is standing ... today it's also relevant.Probably there is not no one country in the world where it would be no place for this memorial.
Stunning image, Alexander!

As @Lawson McCulloch said, there are so many anniversary days for sad issues, so we don't have any days left for good things.Fine B&W.

A very poignant picture and one that any Mother or Father who has lost a child to a pointless and cruel war will feel akin to. so many young lives lost and families ruined by such atrocities...and for what...mindless greed and human stuidity. Simple friendliness and being a good neighbour seems to be a thing of the past.Sue
