Mount Vernon - No.1
...on the grounds of the estate of the first President of the United States, George Washington.
Mount Vernon sits along the Potomac River, just south of Alexandria, Virginia.
Today is Presidents Day in the United States. The holiday actually began as Washington's Birthday,
(observed on February 22) shortly after the death of the first Chief Executive. However, more recently, as part of legislation making certain federal holidays uniform in being observed on Mondays, the birthdays of two great American Presidents, Washington and Abraham Lincoln, are now consolidated into this February government holiday.
The photo was taken on Agfa's exquisite fine grain black and white film, Agfapan-25 through a red filter on the
afternoon of a day in late spring that brought with it some dramatic changing-weather skies. Gleaming silver-bright amidst the dark clouds, an airliner is on, appropriately enough, the "Mount Vernon Approach" on its way up the Potomac to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
